Is a Higher Certificate pass in matric?
There are four categories of Matric Pass levels: Bachelor's Degree Pass. Diploma Pass. Higher Certificate Pass.

The Matric certificate, also referred to as the National Senior Certificate (NSC), is issued to learners who have passed according to the National Curriculum. There are different types of these matric certificates depending on the level of achievement by the learner.

To achieve a Bachelors Degree pass, a candidate must pass at least 6 out of 7 subjects and obtain: At least 40% for your Home Language (compulsory) At least 50% for four other subjects excluding Life Orientation. At least 30% in Language of Learning and Teaching (LOLT) of the tertiary (Higher Education) institution.
Diploma: 18 points. Bachelor Degree: 21 points (some exceptions may apply)
When studying further with a higher certificate you can apply to TVET colleges and some private colleges to study in a field of your choice, as long as you meet the admission requirements. Regardless of the marks on you final certificate, if you fail two subject, which mean scoring a 1 (0-29%), you fail the year.
15 APS Score Courses
With your minimum APS score of 15, you can study courses that result in a Higher Certificate Qualification. Such courses include ICB courses and NATED courses. ICB and NATED courses both include a Higher Certificate level.

A Bachelor's Pass gives you a wider variety of options to choose from when it comes to where and what to study. You don't necessarily have to apply to study for a degree at a university or technikon. There are other options available to you, such as distance learning courses.

So How Are Matric Results Calculated? All your class work, assignments, tests and exams you do throughout the year before the final exams counts for 25% of your final mark. The external final exam at the end of the year counts for 75%, except for Life Orientation which is 100% internal assessment.

A Bachelor's Pass means that you can study at any tertiary institution, as long as you meet the requirements for your chosen field of study. If you passed with a Bachelor's Pass, that means you got at least: 40% in your Home Language. 50% in four other High Credit subjects. 30% in two other subjects.

What are Matric Distinctions? To get a distinction in a subject, you will need to pass with 80% or more for that subject. It will be listed on your matric results and in the newspaper. There is also no limit to how many distinctions you can get.

No, you cannot pass Matric if you fail two or more subjects. The only exception is if you have failed one subject.
Does tourism count for APS?
What Subjects Count for APS? Your score will be based on your achievement in any six recognised National Senior Certificate subjects. This includes subjects such as CAT, Tourism and Hospitality. Life Orientation is not used in calculating your APS as it is a 10-credit subject.

Getting distinctions in matric
Set goals: Always aim to achieve your best, and make sure you are always studying or doing an assignment with a purpose in mind. Make sure you understand what a question is asking you, and that you can explain as much of it as possible.
Students who are studying whole qualifications, such as higher certificate programmes, degrees, or diplomas, available at public universities such as Unisa qualify for NSFAS.
For courses in the Humanities, the minimum APS is 28. However, a score of 27 will be considered if there are spaces available. The results of the National Benchmark Test (NBT) will be considered for students who do not meet subject requirements. This is to give opportunities to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

A certificate pass requires a 40% pass in your home language, 2 subjects above 40%, 4 subjects above 30% and you may fail 1 subject. This pass allows you to study for a higher certificate. Unsuccessful students. It is possible for some unsuccessful students to rewrite a paper through a supplementary exam.
The four compulsory subjects are 2 official Languages (one Home Language and one First Additional Language), Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy and Life Orientation. Learners must also choose three optional subjects from a list of 25 approved subjects.
